Our local independent businesses provide much more than just good prices:

Better Service
Local owners and employees really know their businesses and their customers — and can offer you more personalized service and relevant advice.

Superior Quality
Many locally owned independents provide higher-quality products and services to you than the average national chain business.

Unique Choices
Independent local businesses bring their own creativity to their businesses — offering selections you won’t find elsewhere.

Real Commitment
As residents and fellow St. Louisans, local independent business owners have a genuine vested interest in your community's schools, our local environment, and other qualities of life.

Local Character
Local independents help create the many distinctive neighborhoods St. Louis is known for. Buying from your locals helps preserve the St. Louis area's unique culture and prevents it from becoming just another generic Anytown.

Our City and County local independents are just a click away.

Our members are local independents who’ve taken a stand to help spread the word about locals, by joining the BUILD St. Louis business alliance. Please patronize their businesses – and refer friends and family to them, as well.

Located in the historic Vandora Theater Building, we bake the old-world Lickhalter rye breads as well as a selection of organic whole grain breads and sweets. Since 1998, we’ve been a worker-owned collective dedicated to a worker-controlled workplace. Environmental sustainability, neighborhood support, cooperative decision-making as well as quality, local, and organic ingredients are at the center of our mission. We now serve breakfast and lunch Friday through Sunday. Stop by on Saturdays for the Neighborhood Brunch that includes many delicious ingredients from local farms and neighborhood gardens. At Black Bear we say, "Grow food locally, better yet, grow it neighborhoodly!"

Can a loaf of bread be a catalyst for a great conversation? We think so. With three St. Louis-area gathering places – for customers to pop in or linger, to sit quietly or share in conversations and a meal. We treasure our St. Louis roots and are a vital member of the neighborhoods and communities we serve. The collective “we” of Companion is what makes it all possible. At Companion, the foundation of who we are is bread baking. But we’re also in the business of supporting small growers and producers, encouraging sustainability, pushing culinary limits, even fostering friendships. To us, the creative process and the many people it touches along the way are as important as the loaf itself!

Hollyberry Baking and Catering | HollyberryBaking.com
314 968 9239 | 284 East Avenue in Webster Groves (63119) Map
Founded in 1998 by St. Louis native Holly Cunningham, Hollyberry Baking provides made-from-scratch baked goods for corporate gifts. Hollyberry’s products have received many local and national honors, including being named as Rachael Ray’s “Snack of the Day” in May 2009. Hollyberry was also showcased in Paula Deen’s 2009 Holiday Baking collector’s issue, and was named “Best Cookies” by St. Louis Magazine in 2006. Gift orders can be placed by phone, fax, or e-mail. During the 2009 holiday season, Hollyberry Baking has created a unique partnership with St. Patrick Center and its BEGIN New Venture Center. The “Gifts that Give Back!” program will give employment opportunities to those at-risk and less fortunate within the St. Louis community and help to build permanent, positive change for those in need. Hollyberry Baking is utilizing St. Patrick Center’s culinary suite to train, mentor, and supervise the center’s clients to learn valuable job skills by assisting with the production and assembly of the beautiful holiday gifts in their 2009 catalog. Through the program, each purchase of Hollyberry’s corporate gifts will have a direct and positive impact on the lives of those in need in the St. Louis area and put people back to work. This partnership also creates a unique opportunity for businesses to give back to the St. Louis community through their holiday gift giving. The more gifts purchased, the more opportunity exists to assist and train those in need, a critical element of the mission of St. Patrick Center. This is just one of the many ways Hollyberry supports the St. Louis community. The company has also established a mentoring program with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and frequently donates items to support local charitable events, particularly those benefiting women and children.
